Joining UBUC is by far the cheapest way to learn and dive. This page lists what you’ll need to start diving with us. There are two memberships to buy, plus a training pack if you are training with us. Contact the Secretary for more information.
What You’ll Need, and What It’ll Cost
Let’s break down the costs to help you understand where your money is going.
- UBUC Membership (£35)
- BSAC Membership (£18 for first year, £30.50 per year after)
- Your own personal dive gear (see Equipment You Need, approximately £80)
- (Optional) Training Pack (see BSAC Qualifications, £82 if joining as a new trainee)
- (Optional) Open Water training costs (approximately £40-£80, depending on whether accommodation is required)
Unqualified diver – Approximately £280 (£80 of which is your own gear!)
Qualified diver with no gear – Approximately £130
Qualified diver with own gear – £53
As a quick comparison, doing an equivalent PADI Open Water Course in Bristol costs around £400, and you don’t get your own gear to keep afterwards!
UBUC Membership is used by the club to pay for purchasing and servicing of our own equipment. You can purchase UBUC Membership from the Bristol SU website.
The British Sub-Aqua Club is the governing body for underwater activities in the UK. It provides its members with third party insurance cover. All UBUC members need to be members of BSAC before they can take part in any diving activities.
BSAC membership and medical forms can be completed via the BSAC website (please search for ‘Bristol University’).
If you are new to diving or want to continue your training with us, see the BSAC Qualifications page for more information. Training Packs can be bought via the Underwater Events page of the Bristol SU website.
Personal Scuba Gear
We ask all our members to have some personal gear, as the club cannot cater for all sizes and builds. More information can be found in the Equipment You Need guide.
We can provide the rest of the gear you need to dive at very cheap prices, see the Equipment We Have guide.
