Over the weekend of the 19th of August 6 of us tried our luck at getting over to Lundy island to do some of the fantastic diving on offer there. In particular we had obtained a licence to dive the protected wreck of the Iona II from the warden.
We launched the RHIB from Appledore slip as this is the best local launch site, loaded with all our diving equipment, camping gear, and 170L of fuel!
It may come as a surprise, but this turned out to be too heavy for the boat to get up a decent speed, so in an effort to salvage some of the weekend, we decided to ditch the dive gear and go for a camping weekend on the island. Again, this did not go to plan, as the sea state was only just manageable, and with the wind forecast to get stronger for the return journey, we decided to bin it.
Spending the afternoon doing some cost path walks, we decided the best spot for a bit of diving would be Babbacombe beach, and that is where we headed instead. We managed to have a pretty good time of that and were even treated to some sunshine!
Apparently, there is a local seal! This caused Josh and Tim a fair bit of trouble on their diving…
